Looking for a cheap Kindle or Kobo ebook reader? The deals we’ve listed here are genuinely good offers on e-readers that performed well in our tests.
We only feature products we've rigorously tested in our labs – we never recommend 'deals' on duds.
We've scoured major retailers including Argos, Currys and John Lewis, along with Kindle offers on Amazon.co.uk and Kobo offers on Rakuten, to find you a great price on the latest generation of Kindle and Kobo e-readers that launched at the end of 2024.
But for the best possible savings we'd recommend taking a look at the slightly older models, which dropped in price when the newest ebook readers were released.

Released in mid-2023, the Elipsa 2E has one of the biggest screens we’ve seen on an ebook reader. It also comes with a stylus for drafting your own notes, which you can store as Notebook files or convert to PDF or Doc files.
It has Bluetooth connectivity and audiobook support, as well as physical buttons and touchscreen controls.

The Libra Colour is Kobo’s pricier colour e-reader model. It includes a number of features missing from other Kobo e-readers, most notably a page orientation setting (you can read either in portrait or landscape mode).
It also has a curve on the back, designed to make it fit more naturally in your hand, physical controls and touchscreen controls, plus it's IPX8 water resistant.

Kobo Sage

We like: Lets you borrow ebooks from libraries
We don’t like: Further cost for additional useful features
The Sage has been available since late 2021, but it's certainly still worth considering as it includes lots of storage, the ability to borrow books via Libby (built directly into Kobo devices) and the screen is larger than average.
Useful features include Bluetooth connectivity, bookmarks and annotations. Plus you can use a stylus, although this is sold separately for around £70.

How to spot a good e-reader deal
Callum Pears, Which? e-reader expert, says:
While deals are nearly always on for ebooks themselves, offers on e-readers tend to be more sporadic and rare.
But random deal events occasionally crop up for both Kindle devices on Amazon.co.uk and Kobos on Rakuten, and this often incentivises other retailers to offer the same deal or better.
Kindle deals
Amazon started as a bookseller in the 1990s and it continues this legacy with its Kindle range of devices and vast ebook library. Its deals approach is primarily focused on offers on individual ebooks and the Kindle Unlimited subscription service. However, Amazon does sometimes offer Limited Time Deals that include Kindles. They also appear in wider deal events such as Black Friday.
When there are no deals, consider taking advantage of Amazon’s Trade-In scheme. By sending qualifying electronic devices (both Amazon-branded and electronics from other brands are accepted) you can save some money off your next purchase.
Start by accessing the Trade-In page, answer some questions about the device and condition (non-working devices are also eligible) and an offer will be sent. If you accept, arrange for the item to be sent to Amazon and you'll receive a gift card in return. You'll also receive a promotional discount on Amazon-branded products (currently a 20% discount on Kindles).
Kobo deals
Much like Amazon, Rakuten more commonly offers discounts on its ebooks and focuses on its Kobo Plus range of subscriptions. But Kobo e-readers tend to be on offer more often than Kindles, both through the Rakuten store and through other retailers. We’ve also noticed more competitive deals from retailers with a wider range of discounts offered.
